AMD has confirmed that it is looking into those recent and worrying reports of AM5 motherboards and Ryzen 7000X3D Series processors burning up and suffering from permanent damage. In a statement received by AnandTech, AMD said that it is actively investigating the situation, and while the company didn't go so far as to confirm what the root cause is and/or who is to blame, it did encourage those who have been impacted by the issue to contact customer support. GIGABYTE and BIOSTAR are apparently aware of the situation, both having released new BIOS updates today that include voltage limiters, or, as the former might describe it, a "more secure range of SOC voltage settings."

I'm suspecting these chips are being overvolted in ways it can't handle... Clearly. On pins that were fine before.

New tech and being on the bleeding edge always has it's risks, not fun at all for the impacted - for sure.

What is the age old curse "May you live in interesting times?" I can say all the various issues about thread scheduling, voltages, etc we have seen in the computer industry this last 10 years, affecting all providers of shiny new parts, has certainly been, interesting.

Interesting times indeed. From Space Invaders to Adapter-gate, bulldozer to side-channel attacks, crypto, and supply chain breakdown to scalping, and now this, interesting times indeed.

Let's just remember folks that Der8auer showed a non-X3D 7000 series chip that this happened to as well.
