Fatalities are returning to the silver screen. Politicians in Australia have confirmed that a new Mortal Kombat movie will be shot in the country, bringing an estimated 580 jobs. It’s reportedly a reboot that doesn’t continue off of the ‘90s films.

Aquaman and Insidious director James Wan will be producing the film for New Line Cinema, while directing duties will lie with Simon McQuoid. This will be his first feature gig. The screenplay is by Greg Russo, who has also been tapped for the Resident Evil reboot.

“’Mortal Kombat’ will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses,” said Marshall. “The state government’s investment in ‘Mortal Kombat’ will enhance the scope and reach of our production and post production capabilities, bringing the promise of fantastic new jobs for the local film industry.”

This is potentially exciting if done right.
