There is some stiff streaming competition on the way from the likes of Disney (Disney+), NBCUniversal, and WarnerMedia (HBO Max), but Netflix has acquired a big exclusive that should make sitcom fans think twice before leaving for other services. The company now has global streaming rights to one of the most popular shows ever, "Seinfeld."

Netflix didn't mention how much it paid for that privilege, but people familiar with the deal claim it paid "far more than the $500 million NBCUniversal paid for “The Office,” and the $425 million WarnerMedia shelled out for “Friends." The five-year agreement will take effect in 2021.

“‘Seinfeld’ is a one-of-a-kind, iconic, culture-defining show,” Sony Pictures Television Chairman Mike Hopkins said in a statement to The Times. “Now, 30 years after its premiere, ‘Seinfeld’ remains center stage. We’re thrilled to be partnering with Netflix to bring this beloved series to current fans and new audiences around the globe.”
