Tech-focused e-tailer Newegg has announced that it has deployed ChatGPT to improve customers' shopping experience. Newegg has deployed ChatGPT by integrating it into multiple services including PC Builder (currently in the Beta phase), Website Text, Customer Service Chat, and Customer Email Subject Lines. ChatGPT will also help with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by providing offsite content to search engines like Bing and Google.

Newegg is clearly not holding back in its efforts to use the new AI in as many customer support applications as possible. From helping customers pick the right part for their needs to aiding in the correct subject lines for requesting further support and even offsite content generation, the company is looking for as many ways as it can to have ChatGPT act as an intermediate in communications between it and its customers. Even though Newegg has deployed ChatGPT already the company has stated this project is still in its early phases but expects the benefits of its use to be substantial.

Yea 100%. As someone who works for a company with a lot of phone reps... once you get these AI engines properly conversational and able to use language based on the identity associated with the caller that they are most comfortable with. Including tonal and and speech patterns, and social references that are generationally accurate. Phone work people are well and truly ****ed by anyone that can afford to get an AI system handling 90% of all phone calls.

The issue is you would need to replace several hundred if not 1k plus phone workers to make it financially viable. BUT.... I could be wrong if Newegg is able to afford this. It's not like they have tens of thousands of employees. Just depends on the scale.

Walmart, Sams club, Mcdonalds, and on and on that have 100k plus people working for them will be able to cut human cost for many of their scripted content things and trim down to a shell of their floors. Recovering human cost, space costs, cooling costs and on and on...

The only thing that might prevent that are UL licensed phone centers that have UL specific requirements... right until those get updated too.

AI might be the big driver coming behind Universal Minimum Wage in the US and around the world for industrial nations. There are only so many jobs for unskilled labor... phone center people to take orders for **** or be base point of contact for customer service issues are the big one... A lot of those jobs are overseas in India or down south in Mexico today... but the cost to do that is going to be high compared to a good AI setup that can handle 1000 calls at a time with ease.
 
Honestly, I'd rather talk to an AI than someone in call center in India that I can barely speak my language.

But I can already imagine that AI will not be a whole lot better than those endless call menus that you used to have to navigate, and they will be locked down to strictly operate on the same flow charts that the call center folks are, jealously guarding access to the only person in the world who can actually solve your problem.

I'm fairly certain this has been unofficially getting tested in the wild for a while now. I tend to prefer using online chat when possible for support since it means I can work on multiple things in between responses I started to notice what seemed to be some auto-generated names for one of our service providers about a year or two ago and when I asked another IT person who also deals with them they agreed that AI was probably getting tested in the online help portals.

Yeah, I thought the same, the writing is on the wall for those positions.

Yeah, my least favorite phone support is from Comcast. I've got nothing against the company, and I'm usually happy with the techs when we need something done but their phone system has seriously pissed me off at times. I know there are a lot of folks out there who are angry with Comcast and I'm sure have good reasons but for me/us they've been pretty good, both personally and commercially.
 
That's just it a good phone system especially with ai should be indistinguishable from a normal human interaction other than likely being... Better.
 
I tried the PC builder service for kicks, and ran into the expected problem of not knowing how to formulate the query in a way that the AI understands. Its suggestions seemed completely random. It wasn't clear whether it recognized any of the key technologies in my query, or whether it simply ignored them. It also failed to produce an RGB-free set of components, but in fairness, that may have been an impossible task. It was unable to detect sarcasm and showed no appreciation for jokes, riddles, or puns. I was very disappointed with the service, and intend to send a formal complaint to its superior.

People new to building PCs would probably benefit much more from a simple configurator that offers selections from a curated set of components known to work together, similar to what has already existed for ages.

I read a few posts in the TPU forums that it's not very optimized for the best pricing options yet either. I haven't tried it yet and was going to but then I started to look to see if they've added videos for it and got hung up on the ones I put in my snip in the story post.

Imagine chatgpt replacing scam call centers. But will it have an Indian accent and arrogant tone?

Years ago I got pissed at one after getting a barrage of calls relating to Windows activation and I decided to be creative with my responses since I had the energy to do so at that moment.

"Sir, I'm calling about . . . .Windows"
Me - "Why yes, my windows are dirty, how kind of you to check in about that"
"No sir, I'm calling because . . ."
Me - "Our roof is pretty high so you're techs are going to need some tall ladders"
"Sir, we can . . ."
Me - "Oh, and it can be pretty windy here so you'll want to make sure they can safely clean the outside"


I could honestly hear people in the background laughing as this poor schmuck tried to hook me in and I just kept interrupting him with these types of replies. I think I kept him going for around 10-15 minutes before he hung up or we got 'disconnected'. I never got another call from that one.
