PlayStation has begun rolling out its latest beta for PS5, ushering in a welcome feature for those with larger game libraries: support for larger-capacity M.2 SSDs. "You can now use an M.2 SSD with a maximum capacity of 8 TB (up from the previous 4 TB limit) to expand storage space on your PS5 console," Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Experience, SIE, confirmed at the end of today's writeup about the new PS5 beta, which also introduces new audio options, social features, UI enhancements, and more. This beta is currently limited to invited participants in select countries, but PlayStation is planning to release the update globally later this year.

"Assign a second controller as an assist controller to operate the PS5 collaboratively or help others navigate challenging game sections."
Huh, interesting...

"Turn on haptic feedback while navigating the PS5 for enhanced immersion and accessibility for players with sight or hearing disabilities."
Also interesting.

"Conveniently search for games within your game library." Surprised there wasn't already a function like this.

So 500 for a console. Another 800 for an 8tb nvme drive that is pcie gen 4 or 300 for gen 3.

Oops ps5 doesn't support pcie gen 3.

It doesn't?! I thought PCIe was back-compat? You're telling me Sony went out of their way to block PCIe 3.0 devices from working in their PCIe 4.0 machine?!

They not only block Gen 3, they only support specific Gen 4 models via a white list - supposedly to ensure they are fast enough. And even worse - they haven't made the white list public - they just officially publish the minimum specifications and have left it to the community to find which drives work and which do not.

I'm sure the hardware could support it - it's just Sony blocking them via software.

I guess it's better than the proprietary form factor the Xbox has, but only barely.

Yea I was shocked. I only find one manufacturer that has 8TV NVME drives available at microcenter. And the Gen4 ones are 799.99.
