  1. Upgrade Deal Alert: AMD AM4 Processors at All Time Lows

5700x3d is tempting but I doubt it's worth $180 upgrade over my 5700x. Is Civ V going to process AI turns twice as fast LOL :) ?
  2. AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU Review: 8-Core Zen 5 at $359

I think Microcenter will flash the board up if you buy a combo with a new cpu + not brand new mobo edit - oh they charge $30. Hmmm maybe not.
  3. AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU Review: 8-Core Zen 5 at $359

I've had a similar experience with an el cheapo microatx MC bundle Asrock B350 board. That one started with a 1600x, then a 2700x, now a 3700x.... and it could probably handle my 5700x in my main rig if I decided to bother any more. But I'm not doing nearly the video render work I used to...
  4. 50 TB HDDs Are Coming in 2026–2027, IEEE Says

yep. LTO9 is 19tb uncompressed and 45tb compresses. IBM has a drive that will do around 50 / 150. Tape is still very much a thing for archival.
  5. 50 TB HDDs Are Coming in 2026–2027, IEEE Says

These monsters aren't designed with home use in mind, they are aimed at enterprise / datacenter / cloud. For SANs, density is king. And they all throw a ton of SSD at the top of the stack for cache. Eventually the tech will trickle down to consumer level if there is any demand for it. But...
  6. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Unveils PC Requirements Ahead of February 2025 Release

https://forums.civfanatics.com/forums/community-patch-project.497/ The expanded UI takes some getting used to, it throws a TON of info on the screen. On a big honkin' monitor, it's fine. On a laptop it makes for a cramped experience. Parts of it can be turned off. The AI is SO much harder...
  7. Sid Meier’s Civilization VII Unveils PC Requirements Ahead of February 2025 Release

LOL I didn't think Civ 5 even used that many threads. The end game on big maps gets brutal between turns. I still play Civ 5 with the Vox Populi mod. If you haven't tried it you really should. It changes/fixes SO many things. I have buyer's remorse for Beyond Earth and Civ 6..... I bought...
  8. Most Gamers Prefer Single-Player Games, New Research Reveals

Now I can't even scrape up an hour or 2 with my friends online with voice chat. We figure if we have a couple hours to kill we'd rather meet in person and go drinking etc
  9. Most Gamers Prefer Single-Player Games, New Research Reveals

Yeah my buddy and his roommate hosted every now and then like 20 years ago. We would always pop the breakers during heated fragging.... we each started bringing super long yardwork extension cords to plug into outlets in different parts of the house to spread the load out. Power and ethernet...
  10. “Disaster”: Star Wars Outlaws Has Only Sold 1 Million Copies Worldwide, It’s Claimed

I read a new patch is out that fixes tons of stuff like stealth, speeders, etc. Maybe I'll wait a year until it gets under $30 and all patched up
  11. Most Gamers Prefer Single-Player Games, New Research Reveals

I have such buyer's remorse for Helldivers 2. That game REALLY needs a good single player campaign, it could have been awesome based on the boot camp training. But no here's a really cool looking game, now go play with a bunch of randos who also have no idea what they are doing.
  12. ASRock X870E Taichi Motherboard Review

nice review! A bit pricey for my tastes but prices and cheaper models will trickle down eventually I'm sure. I can wait, I don't need to be on the bleeding edge
  13. “Disaster”: Star Wars Outlaws Has Only Sold 1 Million Copies Worldwide, It’s Claimed

suck it, Ubisoft. You cannot reskin AssCreed / FarCry eternally. Sadly if this game had come out 20+ years ago it might have been regarded a masterpiece. Now it's just a more of the same open world BS game with a SW flavor.
  14. Microsoft Officially Retires WordPad After 28 Years

My dad uses it just for simple word proc stuff that he shouldn't have to buy Office for.
  15. The Sound Blaster GS5 Is a 60W Soundbar with Full-Range Racetrack Drivers, Adjustable RGB, and a Built-In Port Tube for Optimal Bass

So I guess Creative had to pivot to something since people aren't buying Sound Blasters any more :) But do I really need RGB disco lights coming out of my soundbar? ehhhh
  16. Most Gamers Prefer Single-Player Games, New Research Reveals

I think there is room for both. But I would say I'm 85% single player. Maybe 90%
  17. Xbox “Redefining Gaming” with Series X|S Lifetime Sales at 28.3 Million and PlayStation 5 at 61.7 Million: Report

Those 360 numbers have to be skewed since so many people bought more than one to replace broken ones. I know I bought 2 but one of those got replaced twice, so I actually have been through 4. Finally got a winner with the last one, a Jasper. Oh I forgot I got "gifted" a broken one that MS...
  18. PS5 Pro May Cost $650 in the U.S., Analysts Say as They Predict No Price Cut for the Base Model

The 4K ones I have seen look pretty good, but this discs can be better. All depends on the quality. Mostly with the discs you get all the HDR flavors and better sound quality, plus all the extras etc but most movies don't take too much advantage of those any more.
