Apex Storage has begun taking pre-orders for the Apex Storage X16, a $1,824 AIC that supports up to 16 M.2 PCI Gen 4 NVMe SSDs for 128 TB of super-fast storage. Sequential read and write performance is listed as being 30.5 GB/s and 26.5 GB/s, respectively, while Apex Storage has also promised support for a wide range of M.2 SSDs, including Intel Optane. The Apex Storage X21, an alternative that supports up to 21 M.2 Gen 4 NVME SSDs for up to 168 TB of storage, is also available for pre-order at $2,800.

$2000 or $3000 for an adaptor card? GTFO, for that price it should be populated with SSDs.

I think a good chunk of that price goes to a combination of the PCIe switch that allows it to work (PCIe switches aren't cheap) and a complex board layout. That's a lot of traces in a tight space.

The thing is, it's an enterprise product. Enterprise products always demand a price premium. A consumer version would certainly have to be cheaper.
