AMD is planning to launch a fourth 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper SKU for enthusiasts who consider the core sweet spot to be somewhere between 32 and 64.
Information pertaining to an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3980X has been spotted in CPU-Z 1.91 code.
This is a 48-core/96-thread chip that will sit right between the Threadripper 3970X (32C/64T) and 3990X (64C/128T).
Considering the cost of the 3970X ($1,999), this 48 core variant could easily creep close to $3K.
Like the 3990X, the 3980X will likely be built with eight "Zen 2" CCDs (chiplets) for optimal IFOP bandwidth utilization and heat-spread. Each CCD will likely be configured with 6 cores (3 per CCX), adding up to 48 cores on the package.
