Is 240 Hz overkill? ASUS doesn't think so. In fact, it thinks gamers could benefit from an even higher refresh rate: the company's latest IPS monitor, the TUF Gaming VG279QM, refreshes at an incredible 280 Hz. This is a 27" IPS display with a 1920 x 1080 resolution and ELMB Sync, a proprietary technology that combines Extreme Low Motion Blur backlight strobing and variable refresh rates for a blur- and tear-free experience.

The ELMB (Extreme Low Motion Blur) mode allows for a 1ms MPRT spec as well and offers a strobing blur reduction backlight. There is talk on the spec pages that this will also feature their ELMB-sync technology, allowing for simultaneous use of the blur reduction mode and VRR. You can see our review of their VG27AQ display for more info about ELMB-sync.

ASUS can't figure out what its doing with its branding some days. On video cards, ROG STRIX is the high end. On motherboards, ROG STRIX is the entry level.

Last serious review of an IPS panel with claimed 1ms response wasn't even fast enough to actually display 240 frames per second. When using insane overshoot it got closer but at quality loss. I doubt 280 is possible here.

It's 1080P and 27", which makes it a total non-starter as far as I am concerned.

I'm fine with 27 @ 1080 cause it makes it easier to get that high frame rate and I'd rather have a constant 144+ fps than 70 fps at a higher pixel density. I'm on a 27" Acer Predator at 240 Hz now and love it. Moved back from a 1440 32" and have no regrets.

That said, I honestly can't tell any different once you get much higher than 144 Hz. Not sure I see any sense in buying a 280 Hz screen, not to mention how hard it would be to drive 280 fps. Guess they just need to come out with a new gimmick to have something to sell people.
