Avatar: The Way of Water, Top Gun: Maverick Nominated for Best Picture Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has shared its list of nominees for the 95th Academy Awards, teasing an Oscars 2023 show that may be of interest to those who are privy to blockbusters. Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick, two of last year's most successful films, both in terms of box office revenue and critical acclaim, are up for an Oscar in the coveted Best Picture category. The original Avatar (2009) was nominated for Best Picture for the 82nd Academy Awards but did not win, and while Top Gun: Maverick's nomination has surprised and been received well by many, Tom Cruise fans seem to be upset that the 60-year-old actor has missed out on what could have been his third chance at winning an Oscar for Best Actor.

I don't think either one is best picture material, maybe on technical prizes I could see it. But these were literally just the two lowest common denominators of the year.
