Boba Fett’s Slave 1 Starship Gets a New Official Name

Boba Fett fans weren’t happy when they learned earlier this summer that Disney would be dropping the name of the bounty hunter’s iconic starship, the Slave 1. That hasn’t stopped the media conglomerate from officially rebranding the ship, however.



As revealed in a press release pertaining to “War of the Bounty Hunters,” an ongoing Star Wars comic crossover comprising limited series and one-shots, Boba Fett’s starship is now apparently called the Firespray. This is according to one of the bullet points that detail the event’s various blueprint variant covers with other memorable characters such as IG-88 and Bossk.



Star Wars fans don’t seem to be in love with the name thus far, but it’s certainly not the worst choice and is actually quite appropriate, being that it’s derived...

I had heard about this before, but they hadn't announced the official replacement name as far as I recall. For those who don't know, this is nonsense as "Firespray" was always the ships model and type. It was designated as a "Firespray patrol craft."

It's ****ing amateur hour at a Disney.

I can't recall if "Firespray" was the brand or the model. I think it was the latter. It would be more like calling the Galaxy Class U.S.S. Enterprise the Galaxy. Given there were around a dozen or more of those made that wouldn't make much sense as they'd all have the same name. Your referring to all F-150's simply as "F-150".

In a sense it works, but it's lazy writing. It's also not how ships are traditionally named. They have a brand, model and a specific unique name. In this case, it's like Boba Fett never bothered to name it and just referred to it by it's model.

That's actually a bit unusual. Most people will refer to their cars by the type more than the brand. Even so, it's not how ships are named or referenced as a general rule. Star Wars pulls its ship naming from naval tradition in that you call a ship something unique and don't reference it by type. The Millennium Falcon is a Corellian Engineering Corporation YT-1300F. No one calls it by what it is. It's always referenced as the "Millennium Falcon."

I looked it up, Slave-1 is a Kuat Systems Engineering Firespray-31 patrol craft. So instead of referring to it by name, it's being called by its model rather than it's brand / manufacturer. It's just lazy.

Doesn't that depend on the size of the ship? I don't recall any X-wings or similar ships to have distinct names, then again I'm not that much into the lore to know that kind of thing for sure.

Fighters don't, but freighters and similar sized craft do.

For vehicles with no unique name we usually use the model, but as an unique name? Especially at work we like to give nicknames to cars. But this is besides the point, as we are talking about ships that usually have unique names. I was just demonstrating how lazy that naming is.

Exactly. Let's take Star Trek for example: Nearly every ship you've ever seen on screen has a name. Well, all the Federation starships do. A lot of them even on Deep Space Nine did and that's kind of an achievement given how many there were getting blown up. In Star Wars, it would be much the same with all freighter sized ships getting names. The Trandoshan in the Empire Strikes back? He's got a name and so does his ship. His ship was never even seen on film. In fact, just about all the Bounty Hunters on Darth Vader's Star Destroyer (which also has a name) had ships with names.
