DDR3 Prices Expected to Rise in 2021

DigiTimes (via TechPowerUp) has reported that DDR3 memory prices are expected to rise between 40 and 50 percent in 2021. This comes as quite a surprise, as DDR3 was introduced back in 2007 and DDR4 has largely become mainstream at this point. DDR5 is already in the wings, as companies have begun validation or production phases.



The price hike is due to SK hynix and other major manufacturers scaling back or stopping DDR3 production. Some 2 GB and 4 GB modules have already...

Not a surprise.

It happens with every generation of RAM as production shuts down to focus on the next generation, but it is still reasonably new enough that there is demand.

I'm just surprised that it has taken this long. DDR4 has been on the market for quite some time now.

I guess it has to do with how progress has been slower in the PC market over the last 15 years, so older hardware is relevant for much longer than in the past.
