Developers Are Having Trouble Getting PS4 Saves Working on PS5

One of the perks of the upcoming console generation is that users will be able to upgrade certain games (e.g., Cyberpunk 2077, Far Cry 6) to their shinier, faster-loading PlayStation 5 and/or Xbox Series X versions at no additional cost. There’s a problem steadily brewing from the Sony side of the camp, however: more and more developers are admitting that PS4 saves will not carry over to the PS5 versions.



One such party is Codemasters, which recently took to Twitter to confirm that PS4 saves for Dirt 5 won’t be fully supported for the PS5 version. Only content from the racer’s “Playgrounds” mode (a mode that lets players design, create, edit, and race in custom areans) will carry over.

I can't really see how something like a save file would be platform dependant on the technology side - it's a save file, it's software.

I think it's more of an issue that Microsoft probably requires it if you want your game to be certified, whereas Sony doesn't.
 
Well, truth be told, most of the games I play are online and the "save" is part of the online account.

But for offline games, a lot of those that I do play I do on the console. But I'm not exactly looking to transfer progress and play a bunch of my old games on shiny new hardware - I want to play shiny new games on shiny new hardware.

Well yes, we all do; however what if you aren't done with a game you recently bought and a new console/hardware was released that you happen to buy. Do you want to continue playing your current game with the hold hardware or the new hardware with better visuals? lol
