Disney+ now boasts 118.1 million subscribers. The tally has been confirmed in The Walt Disney Company’s earnings report for its fourth quarter and fiscal year ended October 2, 2021, which shows that the streaming service gained 2.1 million subscribers in the last quarter and 44.4 million subscribers in the last 12 months. Disney+ only launched two years ago on November 12, 2019.

Operating losses increased from $0.4 to $0.6 billion partially because of Disney+, however. This was due to expansion efforts such as higher programming and production.

From Disney:

The higher loss at Disney+ was due to higher programming and production, marketing and technology costs, partially offset by increases in subscription and Premier Access revenues. Higher subscription revenue reflected subscriber growth and increases in retail pricing. Higher Premier Access revenue was due...

I'd be curious to know how many of these are actually PAID subscriptions, not people who got it free with something else.
Exactly. I think every person I know who has Disney+ did not actually pay for it, it was included with something else they got. Like my sister and her husband got it through their Verizon FiOS+TV subscription.

I myself never use streaming services, even if I can get access to them for free. The media I watch streams from my local storage.

Same.

We got Disney+ free through Verizon FiOS, but I have never actually bothered to sign up for it or use it.

I paid, but ain't using it. I prepaid 3 years. Don't think I am renewing. Its the least used service I have.

I enjoy it for a few shows so it's worth it to me. The Marvel series on there are good. Mandalorian is top knotch. Another Star war series with Asoka is coming. Plus if you have kids around nothing beats Disney + for content safe for kiddo's for the most part.

Disney plus is still what I call a stub service.
Like shudder, paramount, hbo max... On and on.
Netflix has a way of worming itself to be the main one month after month. Prime is always there, always appreciated since its part of the prime membership which has a way of worming itself year after year. For a hot while Hulu became very central to my watching habits, then they shot it all to hell, and I never looked back.

Personally I just find it annoying that everyone has to have their own streaming service with their own exclusives.

The fragmentation is horrifically annoying.

I don't do streaming anymore - in part because of this - because I don't want to chase the series I want to watch du jour from service to service.

I just want one streaming service that has everything I want.

I feel similarly about Game storefronts/launchers.

On one hand - yeah, that'd be convenient.

On the other hand, in this is what they do in Communist Russia. So I'm ok having some amount of choice as well.

I do agree it's a bit overboard right now though. I think, like most fledgling industries - one early winner comes out and shows it can be done, then it proliferates out to something ridiculous while everyone thinks they can do it better and races to get something out there. Then it'll consolidate back down as the big fish eat the little fish.

We are at the point where the big fish are starting to eyeball the little fish - in 5 years it'll look entirely different than it does today.

Don't get me wrong.

I think we should have choices. Competition is what makes products and services better!

I would like to see multiple streaming services compete with each other, while carrying all the same content.

Let them compete on price, user interface, features, platform reliability, etc. In other words on the merits of the platform itself, rather than holding popular content hostage.

As it stands, it really isn't competition if only one source had the content you want. Where is the choice there? You either choose the platform that had it, or go without :/

Yeah. It'd be nice. Seems like that's almost exactly what we had with the older cable/sat situation though. And that would have been nice if they didn't force bundle a ton of crap for one channel you wanted to watch, driving the price through the roof.

Yeah, the bundles were (and still are) awful.

And in reality, most places didn't have all that much competition. If you were lucky you could choose between one cable provider and a satellite based provider. It was rare for a neighborhood to ave more than one cable provider.

I have been contemplating going to Disney+ but I fear they have too little content to keep me entertained for long.

Nerflix imo has gone downhill pretty bad, the series of old which they used to draw people in are long gone, and the new stuff does not hold a candle to those.

The marvel license is also gone, not that all those series were on the same lvl but most I would still watch. Still waiting on the new Fargo series and better call Saul.

the upcomming price hike might be it for me to unsub for a while.
