Countless sci-fi films and video games such as Quantic Dream’s excellent Detroit: Beyond Human have teased an advanced future populated by humanoid robots that are capable of doing everything that their creators can, and more. It appears that Elon Musk is going to be the first visionary entrepreneur to make this into a reality.



Or, at least, that’s what the Tesla CEO claimed during an event livestreamed last night pertaining to the advancements that his company has made in the artificial intelligence field.



During the event, Musk revealed that Tesla would be building a new product called the “Tesla Bot.” As noted in one of the slides seen in the presentation, this will be a 125-pound humanoid robot leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies and autopilot hardware that can walk up to 5 MPH, carry 45 pounds, and deadlift 150 pounds. What have you tried to drive to creation and failed at? More importantly what have your successes been?

It's easy to be a critic but I wouldn't take that challenge agaisnt Musk.

Might it fail? Sure. Are you afraid to fail? Is success your only path forward? If so... You're constraining yourself and the teams you oversee.

It's easy to be a critic but I wouldn't take that challenge agaisnt Musk.

How is it easy? If anything the fanboys make it really hard because they descend like vultures whenever somebody points out any fault with his brilliance.

Might it fail? Sure. Are you afraid to fail? Is success your only path forward? If so... You're constraining yourself and the teams you oversee.

The things is that it is pointless clout, and he is known for stupid ideas that easily debunked by scientific thinking. The question you should be asking is not will it work. But why the heck do we need a humanoid squatting robot?
He did two things right, he started up SpaceX and Tesla, but he didn't invent anything. His 'inventions' range from sheer lunacy to infeasible and highly impractical, oh and of course plagiarism.

Let's start from the smallest things he promised but hasn't delivered on:

1. Unbreakable glass
2. Cybertruck in production in 2021
3. Fully autonomous self driving teslas by 2017
4. Tesla Semi in full production by 2020.
5. Tesla Semi btw is worthless as the battery necessary to reach claimed range stats would take up most of usable cargo capacity
6. Solar Shingles (unveiled without the faintest idea how to make them)
7. The Vegas Loop (promised fully autonomous 150+ mile system, delivered human driven taxi service in small tunnels at 35mph)
8. The Boring company that would cut the cost of digging tunnels tenfold turned out to cost exactly the same as current tech, because it is that.
9. Earth to earth lunacy (Let's make flights 1000 times more dangerous and costly)
10. And finally hyperloon

This is not nearly a comprehensive list, just off the top of my head. I'm sure there were other outlandish promises that I don't remember now.
BTW even the reusable rockets aren't that amazing as they haven't managed to significantly cut launch costs, as they only reused some of the recovered rockets after extensive overhauls. But of course nobody wants to look at it beyond the fancy livestreams.

I very nearly bought the solar shingles - I think they are a great idea. And I need a new roof soonish. It was about two years ago this time that I signed up.

They had me take some pics, no big deal. Very small deposit, like $100.

Then. Nothing for a few months. February or so, they get back to me with a few options. I declined the Powerwalls because I already had a standby generator and they wouldn't integrate together, but otherwise loaded up with as many panels as I could. It was pricey, but it was cheaper than new roof + solar. A representative comes out and looks at the house and inspects the roof and wiring and everything - all is good to go. They would call once permits were approved and get started.

Then. Nothing. Nothing all spring. Nothing all Summer. I couldn't even get them to return my phone calls. I called the county - turns out permits were kicked back in March and waiting on resubmission. I write Tesla a nasty letter and finally get them to return my call.

Now we are butting up on October/November, which is when the rain and snow starts, and that will delay the roof yet another year. Tesla promises they will get started. Then they reposition the inverter - something about not being able to position on a southern wall -- even though it was indoors. We get that straight, then the utility doesn't like the way the standby generator is wired with the new inverter. We get that straightened out.

Then, finally, it's the weekend before Thanksgiving. They are just about to start tearing off the roof - with Snow in the forecast for the week following. The crew is sitting in the driveway to start the tear off, when the foreman hands me a piece of paper I need to sign before they can start.

The paper states that they are going to disconnect the standby generator, remove the transfer switch, completely replace my main meter box,, not hook the standby generator back up, put the inverter in a completely different location than discussed, and charge me several thousand more dollars than the agreed upon price for all of this.

I canceled, with the guys standing in my driveway ready to start. Tesla didn't complain - refunded my $100 deposit, and I haven't heard from them since.

I've been mostly happy with SpaceX and Starlink. Tesla, however, can KMA.

My next door neighbor got Powerwalls and regular rooftop solar installed the next month - with about 30 days of turn around -- part of the same crew that was in my driveway when I turned them around. However, it's been on his roof since ... December and it still isn't turned on or working - issues with utility interconnect.

Actually no... I wouldn't call myself a fanboy. But a business leader willing to take risks on moon shot projects and openly talk about them doesn't make them a cook to me. If Bezos or any of the other billionaires came out and said.

"Hey we are trying to forge ground on some new tech. We want to have these items in a workable condition in 3 years. Here is what they are. Isn't that **** cool?!" I would feel the same way. And I wouldn't punish someone or act punitively against someone trying to advance tech/society and their pocketbooks at the same time.

Perhaps that's just me. I get it. There are people that need to be safe and make deliverables day in and day out. We need those people in the world too. I just recognize that some people have put themselves into the position to take moonshots whatever they may be. And I'm down to watch those people and their struggles. Maybe even work for them one day. Who knows. But that's not today and not my reality.

I just fail to see the point of ****ting on someone trying to make change... even if they fail.

As to the other post about the whole shingle setup. Wow that sucks that you got screwed around like that. Almost makes me wish you had a engineer and lawyer contracted to YOU to help represent your desires and make sure they were met. Sad it ended the way it did but good job protecting yourself.

You are clinging to the wrong thing. It's not about who said it, it's about whether it is stupid or not. If Bezos would say something stupid like let's pave parking lots with solar panels, I'd call that out the same way as when Musk says 500 mile long vacuum chambers are a great idea and "not that complicated" to make.

It's not about the when. What is demonstrably and scientifically unfeasible now, will not magically become a sound idea 3 years from now, or 5 or 10 years. For example the idea of vacuum trains has been around since the early 1900s. And tunnels do exist, the fact Musk can sell it as a new invention just proves how good a snake oil salesman he is.

Get out of here with this condescending bs. That just make me cringe that you think you are a visionary for believing every word musk utters. In reality you are gullible, which is exactly what he needs to succeed and keep on selling promises that he knows can never be realized. If you didn't have confirmation bias and dared to look into the numerous articles and videos debunking his ideas you'd see. But of course if you don't understand the science behind it then it might just seem one person's words against another. But it's usually not rocket science most of his ideas don't stand up to basic high school level scrutiny.

Change for the sake of change is not good. Innovation is good. Innovation comes from demand. There was never any demand for squatting robots.

I don't ck sider myself a visionary. If someone wants to burn a pile of money giving others a job and most likely fueling someone else's vision that they believe in. I am not going to crap on it. It's their money to burn.

How many musk business products do I own? 0

Mow many products associated with musk ventures am I invested in? 0

It's entertaining to me to see someone with passion for their projects and a want or need to understand them represent them. There is a great guided tour of SpaceX on YouTube with a guy asking questions. Very interesting.

And yea I get it. I consider letting a billionaire spin up businesses to pursue product creation a good thing. If they don't sell they don't sell. No skin off my teeth. I'm not the target market.
