WB Games has released a new story trailer for its upcoming open-world action RPG, Gotham Knights. Developed by WB Games Montreal, the game centers around Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin, all of whom must rise up as the protectors of Gotham City following the supposed death of their mentor, Batman. One of the major forces that they will be going up against is the Court of Owls, a secret criminal society that kidnaps young circus performers to turn into assassins (“Talons”).

I have no interest in a follow up to Arkham Knight without Batman. While the characters may be strong enough to carry their own game, I am not a fan of how the Arkham Trilogy concluded. I really wish people using the Batman license would stop copying the ending and other aspects of Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns. I think most people recognize the story's contribution to comic books as a whole but its a divisive book for a good reason. Those reasons are why most aspects of it shouldn't be imitated.

When it comes to dealing with Batman's twilight years and the end of Bruce Wayne's run as the Dark Knight, I have one simple statement:
Batman Beyond > Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns

I agree. I am a Batman fanatic and would see a Batman movie if they cast Gilbert Godfried in the suit! But as much as I love the Batman universe it's just not worth it without, ya know, Batman. It's like an Avengers movie with not Thor, Iron Man or Cap.

I would like to see them start doing different takes on Batman and not just continuations of the Arkham games.

It's actually worse than that. There are Avengers teams that don't have those characters. It's a rotating roster. It's more like a Punisher story with only supporting cast in it and no Punisher. Its a story that literally centers around one person. A person that's not so easily replaced. Batman, more than any other character aside from say Iron Man just doesn't work quite the same way with someone else in the suit. That's not to say the Bruce Wayne Batman is the only interesting one. However, there is a reason why he's the dominant one narratively.
