I played the first one... it was ok in 2002

One assumes this is to drum up interest in the upcoming modern version

I played the "F" out it the first one back "in the day" ..

First Encounter and Second Encounter were big LANParty games for my crew back in the day. I see a lot of general dislike for Serious Sam 2, but I've always had a blast with it, and I enjoyed the silly stupid humor. Been through it twice in 7-8p co-op at LANParties, and once by myself. Serious Sam 3 was kinda disappointing but I still had fun with it, especially the rebalanced version in Serious Sam Fusion. First Encounter HD and Second Encounter HD were also great, and run even better in Fusion. I'm looking forward to Serious Sam 4, although I'm getting tired of prequels and want to see them continue the story from where 2 left off. I already have multiple copies of the classic Serious Sam games, but hey I certainly won't pass up a free, DRM-free copy.
