GSC Game World Cancels NFT Plans for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Following Backlash

Game companies might want to think harder before implementing NFTs into their future titles, as the blockchain technology appears to be getting major hate from gamers around world.



The latest to rethink their ventures into non-fungible tokens is GSC Game World, which announced two days ago that its upcoming post-apocalyptic sequel, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl, would feature NFTs, including one that would allow the owner to star in the game as an NPC courtesy of photogrammetry technology. Following a furious response on Twitter, GSC has opted to remove all NFT elements from the game entirely.



Per GSC Game World’s statement:

Stick a fork in Ubi because they have pretty much confirmed a while ago that this is the way, no turning back from their woke titles, NFTs plans (I mean, their dept is more than its free cash), and if anything, Ubi might open up its storefront to other independent blockchain devs to push their content on its store.
 
Was it for the players though? Or was it because steam would not allow the game to be on their platform with NFTs? Even if this was going to be an EGS exclusive they still want that steam money down the line.

I just hope steam is opposing 3rd party NFTs for the right reasons, and not because they want to implement their own version of it.
