Sounds like steam and the anti cheat vendors need to get together for an appropriate API to allow them to run properly.
 
BattlEye had nearly day-1 support, but it touts Linux and Mac compatibility as part of it's suite. Epic did say that Easy (which is owned by Epic) was being ported to run under Proton, but despite that Fortnite specifically would not.


This gets complicated - if the game is running natively under Linux, ok. If it's being emulated (or not-emulated, if you're a WINE coinsure) under Proton, it's completely different.
