As part of today’s CES festivities, Intel officially announced a bevy of new 12th Gen Core processors for both desktop and mobile platforms.

Intel’s 12th Gen Core family of mobile processors comprises 28 new models and is headlined by what the company is calling the world’s fastest mobile processor, the Core i9-12900HK. Built on the Intel 7 process, the flagship option features 14 cores (six P-Cores, eight E-Cores), a max turbo frequency of up to 5 GHz, and an iGPU leveraging 96 Execution Units.

Intel’s Core i9-12900HK and other H-series processors feature broad memory support, including DDR5-4800, DDR-3200, LPDDR5-5200, and LPDDR4x-4267. Other selling points include up to 4x Thunderbolt 4, 2×4 PCIe Gen 4, and WiFi 6E...

Yea let's get our limited production into as many SKUs as we can... or our design is so messed up that getting more than 20% of our silicone right on a wafer is neigh impossible so these models reflect predictive failure routes.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Segment the market as much as you can because …. I have no idea? So that your customers need a spreadsheet to know which model to buy? So that OEMs have their choice of CPUs in $1 increments? So your data entry team behind Ark keeps their jobs updating spec sheets?

On one hand - yeah, CPUs aren’t quite one size fits all. But on the other, I don’t think it needs 50 different sizes either. Even Baskin Robbins stopped at 31, and ice cream is f’n awesome and no one can get enough of that.
