Nobody can really blame Nintendo for consistently releasing new installments of its biggest franchises for profit, but the Japanese gaming giant will be expanding its business approach by spending more time on original properties in the coming future. The new direction stems from company president Shuntaro Furukawa, who spoke with local outlet Nikkei this week and admitted that increased innovation was required to attract new audiences to gaming in a world that’s overflowing with countless other entertainment options. While Nintendo will still continue to churn out sequels and spin-offs to Mario, Zelda, and other of its long-time properties, fans may want to prepare for more original series in the vein of 2015’s Splatoon and 2001’s Pikmin.
