Noctua has announced the NA-TPG1, a thermal paste guard for AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors that is designed to prevent excess thermal paste from squeezing outward due to the mounting pressure of a cooling solution and accumulating in the cutouts at the sides of the heat spreader.

That could be useful to prevent a mess.

Kind of a shame that it is necessary though.

I don't know what they were thinking when they designed those heat spreaders. That shape just adds cost to a stamped part, and it is a feature that isn't visible once you install the heatsink, so it's not as if anyone cares aesthetically.

I also can't think of any internal feature that would make it necessary.
