Hardwareluxx’s Andreas Schilling has shared additional images of Seasonic’s PCIe connector accessory, which was designed to convert 2x 8-pin connectors into a single, 12-pin connector – the alleged power solution for NVIDIA’s flagship GeForce RTX 30 Series. These photos put the size of the connector into a much better light. Apparently, the 12-pin connector is a lot smaller (or, at least, thinner) than the traditional 8-pin connectors that we’ve been accustomed to on modern GPUs.

Looks easier to break too. Om the female side of the connector those walls are super thin. Means less durable.

Yeah ok, what is the point of this? To sell adapters? Or is Nvidia going to sell Nvidia branded 12vdc power? Each electron has a little "N" on them like Skittles.
Seems ever so pointless avoid a standard for something that has been resolved well already.
Then again from a business and marketing standpoint makes sense. It gives the air of exclusivity and boutiqueness .. specially if they partner with psu makers ( surely they will) , this way only dedicated Nvidia cultists will have a clean connection, with a nicer cable ( maybe like a slime green color ) vs an ugly *** adapter for the commoners.

Its the apple playbook, it shows up in these little ways, no mistakes here. Oh there will be a technical justification of sorts, I mean cults need narratives too. But what really? A 3 ton card needs a tiny plug for some reason? Pfft.

Without the engineering documents you can't say for certain. I think it is disingenuous to go straight to the "big company bad" argument when the product has not even been revealed, yet.

My first guess since the adapter is an option was so that they didn't need to add a third auxiliary connector as a requirement to the reference design to support as many power supplies as possible.

Yes there will be a narrative about " need" just like I am typing this on a glued shut 600 dollar device with a now clearly less than optimal non replaceable battery, because " reasons". Reasons being bull.

Reasons being profit actually. I will say it means a manufacturer can make truly durable and over powered halo devices that have a gsrubteed life cycle of about five years with non replaceable batteries.
