Quake II RTX was just the beginning. According to a job listing posted in September, NVIDIA is seeking a producer for its Lightspeed Studios team, which has been charged with remastering classic PC titles and adding ray tracing to them.

There's no indication of what the studio's first title will be, but it'll be something that gamers "know and love." A DOOM title, perhaps?

NVIDIA is kicking off an exciting new game remastering program. We’re cherry-picking some of the greatest titles from the past decades and bringing them into the ray tracing age, giving them state-of-the-art visuals while keeping the gameplay that made them great. The NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios team is picking up the challenge starting with a title that you know and love but we can’t talk about here!

I hope they really are remastering the very old games.
Adding only RT to basic games wont change stubborn input methods, poor textures, awkward movement etc.
It will be interesting no doubt.

do they need licensing rights/whatever from the publishers/studio's of whatever old games to do this?

You would think they have permission or permission doesnt need to be sought if its a drop on mod.
They wont risk IP infringement.
