Contrary to previous rumors, the PlayStation 5 will only be backward compatible with PlayStation 4 titles. That’s according to a new support document posted by Ubisoft (“Transitioning PlayStation 4 Titles to Next-Gen Versions”), which states that backward compatibility isn’t possible for PS3, PS2, or PS1 games.

“Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games,” Ubisoft wrote.

On the opposite end of the spectrum is the Xbox Series X, which will boast backward compatibility for all previous generations. “Backwards compatibility will be available for supported Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Xbox titles,” another...

OF COURSE IT WON'T BE. Holy crap... how can anyone have this beleaguered expectation at this point?

The PS2 had limited backwards compatibility with the PS1. The PS3 on LAUNCH was supposed to have full backwards compatibility but didn't, and later revisions abandoned that because the market didn't really care. The PS4 was suggested to have it but Sony never actually did it. They WERE going to build in some sort of emulator but that never did take off. Sony has pretty much decided to make a gaming console. Their other schticks just never really did anything other than spawn a couple tech articles then were swiftly forgotten.

What other Schticks?
1. Unix on Playstation.
2. Buy 50 cell processor based Playstation 3(?)'s and make your own home grid compute super computer... if you could get 1 to work.
3. Hardware chip in the PS3 to allow full backwards compatibility.
4. Software emulation in the newer PS3's to allow limited backwards compatibility.

And so on...

In essence outside of being a console... (all be it one you could previously replace or upgrade the hard drive on!) they were really just proof of concepts for some other ideas that ultimately went nowhere.

And this will be more of the same from Sony. Don't get your hopes up. Don't buy in to it have this. The ONLY thing your getting is a device to make pretty interactive lights and sounds.

Or in my case a netflix/hulu/amazon prime and other streaming content player for my old dumb hdtv.

It is and has always been part of PSNow. That came from their OnLive acquisition. Sony's entire strategy is to offer backwards compatibly via their streaming service.

I always suspected that PS5 backwards compatibility would be nearly the same thing, or at least for PS3 and earlier titles.
