Sony has released its earnings report for Q3 FY2021, and it includes some admirable numbers for its next-gen console, the PlayStation 5. According to the report, the PS5 has already managed to sell over 17 million units, which is pretty remarkable for a console that’s only been out for a little over a year. What’s equally intriguing is that the PS5 has already sold more in a single year than the Wii U, Nintendo’s previous-gen console that only reached 13.56 million sales in its lifetime.

From one side it’s great from the other it’s pretty dissapointing, could have easily sold double the amount if they could actually get them made fast enough.

(copied this from the article comments as they don't seem to move to the forum anymore)

Yeah, the other headline would be "Sony downgrades sales estimates as it only sells 17M units due to logistics constraints, sales slower than PS4 for same time period"

Another one of those misleading benchmarks -- Wii U was one of the worst selling consoles.

The PS5 has sold 15.28 million units in 13 months, while the PS4 sold 15.47 million units. ... The PS4 crossed 20 million units in month 17, 30 million units in month 25, and 40 million units in month 31. The PS4 has sold 116.70 million units to date

I would not say that's too bad comparatively. But they could've definitely sold more if there was better supply.

Well clearly someone figured out how to mine on the PS5 and keeps buying them all up.

I can't say I'm surprised. Nintentdo's stuff always strikes me as being for younger and more casual gamers rather than the hardcore console enthusiast.

I am shocked they were able to produce that many. Has to be worldwide, I wonder what the USA numbers are.

Those stats prove me right that MS is sending most of their Xboxes to the US 2:1 vs Europe
Or nobody wants an XBOX in Europe. I mean if I wanted one about 20 different retailers have it on stock right now. In my country of 10 million.

Still can't find a series X around here, not a single retailer in the Benelux has them at MSRP, can find 1 or 2 retailers who charge 700€+ for one.

Nothing on Amazon France, Spain, Italy or Germany

IDK what is the MSRP cheapest listing is for €620 here, but we have 27% VAT.

I think Microsoft has always had an issue selling their console overseas. Just look at their other consoles. Every one of them are near 2:1 USA:Europe
