AMD’s latest budget GPU for mainstream consumers, the Radeon RX 6500 XT, is not the greatest choice for mining ether (ETH) tokens, and gamers who are actually able to get one can thank AMD for that, as the company made an intentional effort to make them undesirable for miners.

This is according to comments from Laura Smith, CVP of Radeon graphics, who told journalists in a recent roundtable discussion about how the Radeon RX 6500 XT was optimized for gaming and bluntly stated that the budget GPU was not attractive for cryptocurrency mining. Smith’s statements can be backed up by the specifications sheet of the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which seems neutered in a few ways that include the utilization of 4 GB rather than 8 GB of memory and a 64-bit memory interface rather than a 128-bit one.

“I would suggest that there’s a lot of dynamics that are involved in...

Well, given this anti mining solution is to equip the card with 4GB Ram, it’s probably not really ideal to use on higher end cards. The 6600 might make sense, but you’re probably not equipping a 6800 with 4gb Ram.

If less Ram really is a successful mining deterrent, perhaps 2GB should be considered too? I looked back at reviews of the Nvidia 670 , and those reviews used 2560x1600 as a resolution, so maybe 2GB wouldn’t be out of the Question for 1080p?

Limiting VRAM on cards only prevents mining of ETH. Alt coins, on the other hand, such as Ravencoin are not limited by 4GB of VRAM on cards.

This could have been my 4k 120hz card upgrade for my htpc. But I guess not.

If 4GB is enough for mining, maybe they should make 2GB cards?

I'm sure the same thing was said about BTC, then ETH, then [insert unknown alt coin here], at some point or another as well.
Yeah but for every BTC there have been dozens of worthless coins. They aren’t all worth crazy money.

You right. You right. What people generally do on those alt coins where their older GPUs can't mine ETH is mine them, then convert them immediately to ETH.

So while they are practically worthless and most likely wont go anywhere, you can still utilize older GPUs to convert them to ETH where people expect bigger things to happen.

and for the most part, those alt coins are only a little less profitable than mining ETH directly (some of them are more profitable)
