Seagate Announces 18 TB Exos X Hard Drives

Data hoarders should be pleased to know that Seagate has begun selling 18 TB versions of its Exos X series hard drives, which are designed for the enterprise market. These are 7200-RPM, helium-based HDDs that offer sustained transfer rates and random reads/writes of up to 270 MB/s and 170 MB/s, respectively. MTBF (mean time between failures) is 2.5 million hours, and they come with a five-year limited warranty.



This seems like a worthy pick for those of you who want to consolidate smaller drives or increase your backup pool in one stroke, but we’re not sure how it fares on the acoustics scale – Seagate hasn’t listed dBA levels in the data sheet, which you can access here. The Exos X18 is...
