Sony Patents PlayStation 5 Faceplates After Threatening Third-Party Makers with Legal Action

Official faceplates for the PlayStation 5 could coming sooner rather than later. As discovered by IGN, Sony has finally patented the idea for removable console plates, something that was expected following its disputes against third-party accessory makers Dbrand and Customize My Plates. Both companies were compelled to stop selling custom faceplates after Sony threatened them with legal action.



From IGN’s report:



On at least two different occasions since the launch of the PlayStation 5, Sony has threatened companies with legal action over their plans to sell unofficial faceplates to consumers. Last year the company Customize My Plates announced that it was canceling all pre-sales of its custom-ready PS5 faceplates following legal pressure from Sony. D!ck move, Sony. And will they even release faceplates of their own? Probably not, or if they do they will cost 3x as much as the third party ones.

Yup. Exactly. They want the third parties to make faceplates, but only if they pay the licensing fees to get the "Official PS accessory" badge.
 
Idk seems such a minor thing to try and capture revenue on. The makers of the plastic pieces should then turn around and screw sony on price per thousand. Instead of probably a buck or so be like 10 bucks each.
