Does the world really need more fighter jets, 80s rock music, and shirtless volleyball? It's beginning to look that way. Paramount has shared new footage of director Joseph Kosinski's (TRON: Legacy, Oblivion) Top Gun sequel, which revisits the role that made Tom Cruise famous. Thirty years later, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is still flaunting his old tricks as a daredevil pilot, but things get complicated when he's charged with training the son of his old wingman, Goose.

When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

I mean, it looks like a modern remake of the first film. A couple rookie hot shots, the experienced instructor, token beach scene, token bar scene, training, someone probably dies, a few dog fight scenes.

They just moved Maverick in to Charlie's position.

Why screw with a winning formula
