Ubisoft has finally agreed to release a new Splinter Cell game after years of demand from gamers clamoring for a flagship stealth-action title. The rumor comes from development sources, who told VGC that the game is being designed to win back fans who didn’t like the idea of the VR-only Splinter Cell project that was announced last year in partnership with Facebook. The last mainline Splinter Cell game, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, was released nearly a decade ago in August 2013.

From VGC:

It’s not clear which studios are working on the project, though two people with knowledge of Ubisoft’s plans suggested the new Splinter Cell was being led by a studio outside of its traditional Montreal base. The title is in an early phase of production, the sources said, but there’s a small chance it could be announced next year.

It’s also unclear how the new Splinter...

My concern is that this will miss the mark. With Ghost Recon, most people wanted more Wildlands and what we got with Breakpoint was a looter shooter. Now, they've since gone back and redeveloped Breakpoint into something more resembling what we initially wanted, but the developers are obviously tone deaf, still often doing the opposite of what's asked for from the community.

Frontline is an example of that. I'd rather Splinter Cell die with dignity and never come back than have it get butchered to the same degree as the other Tom Clancy franchises.

I couldn't disagree more. If they at least try making something, there is at least a non-zero chance of getting a good game. As opposed to it being zero if they don't even make a new game.

You've seen the **** Ubisoft has been putting out lately right? My only hope is that the Splinter Cell tie-ins with Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint have been absolutely excellent. If they can match that level of quality, I'd have no issues giving a new Splinter Cell a try. I'm just worried they won't. Again, Ubisoft usually seems to do the opposite of what the community asks for as of late.

I'd rather see no game than a bad one personally.

Knowing Ubi they will find a way to cock this up and turn it into a pay to win looter shooter

I mean, I wouldn't put it past them but given how far they've turned around Breakpoint I doubt they'll try that. The reaction to Ghost Recon Flatline has been pretty abysmal and they cancelled the public beta indefinitely. As a result, I have a tiny glimmer of hope that a new Splinter Cell game can be good.

Personally, I'm hoping for gameplay that's in line with Wildlands and Breakpoint with more emphasis on indoor stuff. I also want the freedom to go loud if I need to because I lack the patience for stealth, but admittedly I'm not Splinter Cell's core audience. But an entire game of the Splinter Cell stuff in Breakpoint and Wildlands would suit me just fine.
