VAIO Announces World’s First Contoured Carbon Fiber Laptop

VAIO is the first manufacturer in the world to mass produce a 3-D molded, carbon fiber laptop: the VAIO Z. The company shared the news in a press release this morning, which noted that the sleek notebook weighs less than 2.3 pounds and is exceptionally tough thanks to technology previously only available to the car racing industry. Its contoured carbon fiber is made through a process that stacks fiber sheets in three dimensions.

Yes, VAIO is still Sony. I'd thought Sony had abandoned the personal computer market due to realizing just how bad they were at it. Still, it's not like making laptops is actually that hard on a conceptual level, and Sony is definitely reaching for the sky with the pricing here, so there are at least product margins that could support a premium build.

I look forward to seeing how well these compare to both the Apple ultrabooks as well as Dell's XPS line!
