Valve Releases Steam Deck CAD Files, Allowing Anyone to 3D Print New Shells

In a somewhat surprising but highly appreciative move, Valve has shared official CAD files for the Steam Deck, allowing DIY enthusiasts, accessory manufacturers, and modders to easily 3D print their own shell designs for the heavily anticipated handheld.



Prospective Steam Deck owners with 3D printers can find the files on GitLab, which includes an STP model, STL model, and drawings (DWG) for reference. While Valve has noted that Steam Deck users “have every right” to open up and tweak their systems, the company also warned that any resulting damage isn’t covered by the warranty.



Valve releasing CAD files for the Steam Deck is surprising because that isn’t something Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony is ever to likely do with their consoles or accessories. That seems especially true...

They should have taken a page out of Sony's playbook and sue anyone trying to put out a model or 3D print their own into oblivion, so they could sell their own for $70 a pop and make $$$

I don't think Sony would sue you into oblivion for 3D printing your own cover, only if you started selling those covers for profit.
