Honestly.. if our old ESXI hosts... (dual 18 core systems with 512 or was it 784 gigs of ram) had actual hard drives and not compact flash boot drives I'd think about them finding a path to running this stuff.

With that much RAM you could run most things in a RAM drive so it doesn't add wear to the flash drives.

Oh that's not the issue... it's that the Compact flash drives are like 16 gig. So not enough space for most OS's. So not worth the PITA it would be to get it running right.
 
I had a failed NVME drive on a dual EPYC setup once. Ended up using a USB thumb drive running a live Linux distro for longer than I care to admit off it.

Everything worked fine until it rebooted or lost power 😂
