So you're saying to get more bandwidth they need more pinouts and because it's user handled they don't want o have delicate pins so they need more physical space to be more robust? Imagine that.
 
My guess would be, similar to when ethernet jumped to 100Mb, they need some grounding lines to help prevent cross-talk and interference.

I don't see anything about the pins, the pcb is just a little wider

Huh... I wonder then.. if the pinouts are effectively the same why the additional PCB size?
 
Yeah.. Remember the heat that is pumped out by PCI4 drives? PICE5 drives could probably power a steam generator!
