  1. Ryzen 7 2700X vs Ryzen 7 3700X Performance Comparison

Very timely comparison, because I have been wondering if I should have dropped a Zen 2 CPU into my dev box to replace the 2700X. Your testing justified my inaction, particularly given that the money tree has flowered only weakly this year! Keep up the good work.
  2. EVGA BR, Corsair CV reviews?

It's good to read some of the recent activity in PSU reviewing. But if I may be allowed to whinge a bit, how about reviews of some of the "value" line PSU's that for whatever reason have received no love from reviewers? Such as the EVGA BR, which has been out for a couple years now with no...
  3. So annoying high end motherboards with Wifi.

You must have been very fortunate in your choice of wives / girlfriends. :-) Carpet has fallen out of favor in decorating today, particularly wall-to-wall, and unless you're going to fish cables through walls (not always easy/possible without tearing them up), it's often impossible to hide a...
  4. What CPUs are in your Machines?

Things have changed a lot here too. The Ultra-60 is gone, sold for what I paid for it ($50). The original "frankenstein" cluster was also sold off; the hadoop cluster now looks like 4 x Ryzen 1600 plus 1 x Ryzen 2300X. The iMac is now a 2019 model i5-9600K. The 2700X desktop and rMBP are...
  5. Worth the swap?

You're running at 4K? you're probably display limited to 60 fps (visible) anyway. I'd do the upgrade since it might well improve min fps; I wouldn't put money into a more capable CPU than the 1600 unless you're going to change on the display end.
  6. Catalina Continues down a Bumpy but Shared Road

Yes, in part, but if I'm remembering right, Vista was also the first release of the Aero desktop, which was considerably different from the Win 7 desktop without being noticeably better. I also recall Vista being slower than Win 7, at least interactively; although I could be wrong, I never used...
  7. Catalina Continues down a Bumpy but Shared Road

We just bought a new iMac to replace the wife's early 2009, which was having issues. If it shows up with Catalina I'll have to downgrade it to Mojave because the 2 main things she uses both have 32-bit components. (Adobe and RootsMagic) I blame the app developers, not Apple. It's been how...
  8. AMD Radeon RX 5500 GPU Series Announcement

Give me something in the RX 550/560 performance class at a lower TDP; ideally, passively cooled; and I'm buying. I just need video, and while the GT 710 is the usual suspect here, it would be nice to see card that is a) more competent and b) is better served by linux open source drivers. All...
  9. AMD Overtakes NVIDIA in GPU Shipments for the First Time since 2014

I wonder how many of these are RX 570/580's. Good enough to game with, faster than the Nvidia 1650, and cheaper than the 1660. If AMD could come up with an RX 580 replacement that was maybe 15-20% faster and used less power, at a similar price point, I think they would continue holding market...
  10. SSD Review Format Discussion

I wouldn't mind seeing a database benchmark, ideally both TPC-C and TPC-H like, although if I had to choose I'd pick the OLTP benchmark (TPC-C-like).
  11. AMD's Latest AGESA Update Removes PCIe 4.0 Support on Pre-X570 Motherboards

I can maybe see AMD reversing this 6 months or a year down the road, if there's a mobo maker that wants it badly enough. Right now it's one more distraction and potential source of instability complaints. As others have noted, it doesn't really do the X470 any good anyway. I'm waiting for...
  12. FTC: Forget about That $125 Settlement from Equifax

    This, exactly. What a sham.
  13. Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Cooler Review

Nice to see an old favorite still holding up. Next, how about doing one of the $30-ish Enermax coolers? reviews of those things are elusive.
  14. Is your BIOS up to date?

The main dev box is a minor version or two behind, I think it might be at a March release. I don't expect to touch it again unless I change hardware or there's some radical improvement for the 2700X (seems unlikely). The new cluster node is at the latest since it was refusing to overclock...
  15. Editorial: Are Socket AMD BIOS's Too Fat?

And, unfortunately, they can't pay for the new bigger BIOS chips incrementally as they sell boards. They have to buy a batch up front, and then that adds to their inventory carrying cost, not to mention figuring out something to do with remaining inventory of the 16MB chips. At retail it ends...
