Folding@Home January TeAm record run 2026

Honestly.. if our old ESXI hosts... (dual 18 core systems with 512 or was it 784 gigs of ram) had actual hard drives and not compact flash boot drives I'd think about them finding a path to running this stuff.

With that much RAM you could run most things in a RAM drive so it doesn't add wear to the flash drives.

Oh that's not the issue... it's that the Compact flash drives are like 16 gig. So not enough space for most OS's. So not worth the PITA it would be to get it running right.

I had a failed NVME drive on a dual EPYC setup once. Ended up using a USB thumb drive running a live Linux distro for longer than I care to admit off it.

Everything worked fine until it rebooted or lost power 😂

If we can maintain an average of ~900 M/day during the whole month, we shall outdo our previous best month by points.
Precisely we need >868 M/day as average of all 31 days. Our daily average of January 1…21 is 913 M, but the output of the last three days was a little below the desired average. I hope it gets back up after the PrimeGrid challenge ends (that's 1½ days from now) and when Hard|OCP's Folding Challenge starts (2½ days from now).

We here in USA are facing a huge winter storm the next few days with large areas looking at ice accumulations, and extreme cold temps. So don’t be surprised if we have some complete drop outs. I have a generator to keep well and refrigerator going for a while and a kerosine heater, but I am still hoping for the best.

Thumbs up — not to the winter storm, but to you being prepared.
I hope all of you who get caught up in this stay safe.

Here in Germany pretty much all winters are mild, thanks to the Gulf Stream which moderates the local climate of the little peninsula which is Europe. But the downside of a society being used to mild climate is that it tends to be ill prepared to the occasional few days with more severe weather. For instance, when we had a couple of days with snow earlier this month, much of the railway traffic was simply shut down because trains and infrastructure and staff are no longer well prepared for snow in Germany, because of penny pinching. This used to be very different in the 1960s/70s/80s at least.

I think the last really severe winter in Germany was in 1978/79. There were two events of very fast and severe drop of temperature coupled with heavy snowfall and snow drifts, first at the end of 12.1978 and then again mid 02.1979 when snow of the first event was still around. At that time, energy generation was of course predominantly by coal power plants, and they got into severe trouble to get the coal out of the open pit mines, out of the freight trains, even out of the power plants' bunkers, as the coal was deeply frozen. There were emergency power cuts all over the country due to insufficient power generation, often without advance warning of the population. Other industry ran out of coal (bakeries for instance, which was bad obviously), traffic largely broke down etc.. — Except for the brownouts I don't recall any of this myself though because I was a little kid back then. Besides, I lived in that part of Germany in which press was subject to censorship, hence I guess much of what went on in this particular winter became more widely publicized only much later. This winter caused deaths in both parts of Germany. Denmark and parts of Sweden and Poland were affected too.

On another note, right now, some EU countries are sending hundreds of diesel generators to Ukraine — again, on top of the many thousand generators which were sent during the past four years. That's good, but I keep wishing that we removed the need for such supplies, by enabling Ukraine to bring an end to the air raids. IOW to take out the facilities were these raids originate. I have no idea why it doesn't happen; it's obviously easier said than done, but still.

So I wanted to find out in which particular scientific experiments my computers have been involved so far during our record run.

Step 1: Look up the project IDs from the FAHClient log. That's easy:
grep 'Project.*Run.*Clone.*Gen' /var/lib/fahclient/log.txt /var/lib/fahclient/logs/log-2026*.txt | cut -f2 -d' ' | sort -u
I combined the outputs of all F@H hosts of mine and ended up with 63 unique project IDs.

Step 2: Fetch project descriptions from foldingathome.org. I thought that I could do this with very simple web requests. But it seems I was mistaken. So far I only found links which require a javascript enabled web browser to evaluate, but not as I hoped something which I can access with the likes of wget. Here are "my" 63 project IDs, linkyfied:
12134, 12135, 12136, 12294, 12295, 12475, 12476, 12477, 12478, 12479, 12485, 12486, 12701, 12703, 12704, 15000, 15300, 15301, 15302, 15303, 15304, 15305, 15307, 15308, 15309, 15310, 15311, 15312, 15313, 15314, 15315, 15316, 15320, 16525, 16773, 16774, 16775, 16815, 16959, 16969, 16978, 17636, 17640, 17649, 17650, 17651, 17652, 17653, 17654, 17655, 18223, 18228, 18235, 18236, 18237, 18238, 18240, 18245, 18260, 18261, 18262, 18263, 18490

I clicked through a random selection of these and what can I say — I'm a bit dizzy now. :-)

Stef, are you not using the new v8.5.5 client?

If so, I recommend using it. It will display all your work units on the web control panel and you can click on each work unit to see what it does.

1769300860623.png

1769300889283.png

it keeps a huge history of everything all your hosts connected to the web client has done. just click the "i" on them and see what they're about.

Indeed, I was unaware of this v8 client/control feature because I still have v7 everywhere.

Given your past issues with network connectivity and the F@H servers. I would probably test this before full deployment. It requires a constant connection to the server that handles this remote web control panel from each host its watching. I don't think it's sending much data, but an unstable/bad Internet connection could potentially pose issues with it.

Our previous records, previously tracked by Endgame124:
daily peak — 1,666,901,932 points on 1/25/2024
week peak — 7,654,446,4125 points in the week of 1/21/2024
monthly peak — 26,898,347,599 points in January 2024
active users, daily peak — 1481 on 4/19/2020
active users, peak month — 83 in January 2024 (as of 1/23)
New records:
daily peak — 1,975,283,015 points on 1/25/2026
monthly peak — 27,399,282,677 points in January 2026 but with 4½ days still to go

Somehow it feels to me like ages ago that I last posted a report here. And indeed, quite a bit happened since then:
