I could understand it if Microsoft handed out Windows for free...

But they don't. You pay for it somehow.

I still find it ironic and comical that the PC (or Windows) has to search for something. It should KNOW where everything is because the OS APIs were used to put the files wherever they are in the first place. In other words, they really needed the filesystem-as-a-database feature that was part of the early Longhorn build.
