Beyond security updates, bug fixes, wear leveling optimization, and controller or protocol optimizations, firmware updates can also just flat-out improve performance in some areas. For example, I've had this Teamgroup 4TB MP34 SSD on my primary system, as my primary drive for about 9 months now, and just now compared the firmware on it with what is the latest available, and found it could be updated to a newer version. I did a comparison test before, and after, and you can see the results below, I pretty much got random read/write improvements across the board. Not bad, for just a firmware update. It is recommended to keep your NVMe firmware up to date.
