We are getting closer and closer... but I envision when cars come out with a dock. All of the automotive stuff is integrated behind the scenes. Your controller for your system isn't really built in. you buy a device from your manufacturer of choice that interfaces with the car giving you your controls. Updated OS, security, wifi connections and so forth belong to you. You can bring the device with you. (Heck have it just connected to your phone hot spot for connectivity.) but the interface and other experiences outside of the car app for whatever controls the manufacturer wants on the screen are yours.

Added benefit, you can move it between vehicles, or even upgrade it with newer features/capabilities as they come out based on what you want to spend.

The car hosts the universal dock that everyone uses. And they even offer subscriptions for the head units that see you getting an updated one every 18 months or whatever.

It's a little evil but that would keep people in cars longer, as one of the reason with current engine durability being so good that people upgrade. They want the newer better experience.

It wouldn't be for everyone of course. You could also buy a second hand older unit to have in your car to avoid recurring costs and so on.

Pretty sure it exists and it's called CarPlay (or Android Auto if you live on the other side of the fence). Just no auto maker wants to give it their UI entirely.

I do use both. But im talking about a level beyond that. Though I do enjoy it for what it is.
