1,000-Watt PSUs Are Recommended for Overclocked NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Graphics Cards

NVIDIA users who decide to step up to a GeForce RTX 3090 Ti may be tempted to buy a new and more powerful PSU to go along with it.



This is according to a short but eye-catching tweet from VideoCardz, which suggests that manufacturers will be recommending 1,000-watt power supplies to help fuel their custom, overclocked GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics cards. This is a 250-watt increase over what NVIDIA recommends for its GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition (750 watts).

Not surprising as they already advise an 850W for a 3080.

I'd advise it for higher end systems configured with existing RTX 3090 or 3080 Ti GPU's as it is. They can pull more than 350w alone. Add some of these higher end CPU's and other elements into the mix and 850w becomes the bare minimum.

I have to whole heartedly agree. I've seen a 3090, when OC'd, plus OC'd 4930K pull right around 700W from a UPS. Considering the things we've seen with various xx900K processors in recent years that doesn't leave a whole lot of headroom if someone is skating by on 750W or even 850W. Even if it can handle it, that PSU is working pretty hard. Best to be at 1000W or higher and call it good. Spend the extra money, move on, and enjoy the piece of mind.

Man when I tried to replace my Power supply at the beginning of 2021 finding a 1000 watt power supply in stock was a trick that wasn't a chinese POS. I wouldn't mind finding one mind you... just haven't looked again... are PSU's back in stock normally?

Things have gotten better. Mind you I haven't had to look but I've seen plenty pop up on my Amazon suggestions so I'm pretty sure, at least for now, stock isn't too bad.

I saw some decent quality units go up for sale during newegg's 'boxing week' sale last week. There was a 1000w 'Titanium' rated unit for $249 CAD that I was thinking of purchasing (and now kicking myself for not grabbing). I can't remember which AIB it was (maybe an Antec) but the unit itself was based off of something solid according to reviews I read at the time.

I can tell you one thing, I'm really glad I ended up cancelling my plans to go ITX during my last build with the way things are going power-wise. I'm sure these juiced up 3090 ti's will just be a taste of the power requirements to come with the high end 40-series.

There were a lot of sales around the holidays for power supplies. Sure there are some still out there
