According to a new report, Nintendo hardware and game sales continue to hold a lead over the rest of the pack in Japan following a 19-year winning streak. Famitsu has published its annual report on game software and hardware sales and Nintendo is the reigning champ for both categories. This might come as a surprise for some in the West where Sony or Microsoft have either a larger advertising presence with game or next-gen console launches or increased coverage for reviews but Nintendo is well known for hitting the mark with its lower-costing family-oriented hardware and games. The company also has a reputation for taking risks with different hardware configurations and while they usually have the most powerful hardware it does manage to become popular in its own right.

It's cultural... We had a taste of it with pokemon and some locations seeding with monster bait and such. But there it's more ubiquitous. Nintendo realized that mobile is next so they got into mobile. Honestly their form factor is more like a big phone than not. Add phone capabilities and that's all many people would want.
