Microsoft has officially announced that a new round of layoffs is on its way and is offering staff a path to take their walking papers early before they begin. The software publisher has been busy with staff reductions not just in 2026 or 2025, but has been making major cuts since 2023 and is now […]

Jesus...

That's a huge layoff.

I can't help it's one of two things:
AI really is that disruptive, and we are all about to lose our jobs
-or-
The AI bubble is about to collapse, and we are all about to lose our retirement accounts

I can confirm that developers are going to get axed left and right. You can now do weeks worth of development in a few hours. In fact, all you do is tell the AI model what to do and it basically does it unsupervised and may even do stuff wayyyy above your skill level and pay grade and then you get to tell your boss, I told the model what to do. You need someone to tell it what to do in a way that it understands what needs to be done. And that's how the cookie crumbles :(

JellyBench took 18 minutes to create. Compiled on the first attempt with zero errors and I didn't need to make it go through any revisions.

JellyDream took a bit over 20 minutes. Same thing. Everything was done perfectly and I couldn't think of anything better it could have. It's a fairly adaptable application and will downsample the pixels to ensure you get to see something on your screen instead of a sad slideshow.

Seasoned developers are cooked unless they seriously upgrade their AI skills. Code reviews??? Why??? It Just Works. It's even thoroughly tested and only usability testing is left to the user.

Cross platform development? You could tell it to create native versions of other platforms but so far WINE emulation of these Windows binaries works flawlessly so even extra work may not be needed anymore to broaden your audience on the lesser used platforms.

Agreed. Another reason is it is effectively a big expense reduction for the company. Because if it goes like with Intel, and I surmise it will, the long tenured, higher compensated employees AKA the gray beards, will be a very significant portion of those willing to take the buyout. They are also the biggest expense for health insurance. Among other reasons they want to give us older folks the boot.
