Those of you who want to be the first to brag to your friends about owning a QD-OLED display will want to head to Dell straight away, as the AW3423DW, Alienware’s 34-inch curved QD-OLED gaming monitor, is now available to order from the company’s online store for $1,307.49.



Sure, you could probably get an LG OLED with that amount of money, but this option can actually sit on your desk without dwarfing it and features a brand-new implementation of OLED display technology to boot. What’s also cool is that the product is supposedly available to ship within a day, indicating that the AW3423DW is in no way vaporware like Dell’s 4K OLED monitor from a couple of years ago.



For those who are already freaking out about taskbars and game UI elements being burned into the screen, Dell says that Alienware’s 34-inch curved QD-OLED...

Oddly enough, apart from mention of HDR400, I can't seem to find technical specs (resolution, refresh rate, etc) on the main page.

I dug through some technical support docs and got this:

  • 86.82 cm (34.18 in.) viewable area (measured diagonally). Resolution: Up to 3440 x 1440 through DisplayPort and HDMI, with full-screen support or lower resolutions, supporting a high refresh rate of 175 Hz.
$1300 doesn't sound bad for an OLED with those specs. I'm not a huge fan of the ultrawide format, but glad to see stuff like this starting to come out.
 
Quite a few announcement articles had the full rundown - surprised to see that they didn't get it on the formal listing.

The important stuff is:
  • 175Hz in 8-bit and 144Hz in 10-bit over DP
  • 100Hz over HDMI (bandwidth limitation, not sure about bit-depth)
  • Uses a proper G-Sync module that also supports FreeSync, and this does have a very quiet active cooling fan
  • The HDR400 listing is not the half-arsed LCD spec - it's a TrueBlack spec, and I believe it can hit 1000 as per the spec
Otherwise, the only real remaining concern is text rendering quality. Samsung's QD-OLED tech, like LG's OLED tech (and many, many VA LCD panels) has an odd sub-pixel layout that may or may not cause text rendering issues, and this is definitely going to be subjective.
 
I almost want this, but I think I'm looking for actual 4k not 1440. Still though, this year looks great for new displays.
 
I'm sort of keeping an eye out for a new display. I'm thinking of moving the 49" CRG9 into the cave and I'll bounce between it and the 65" Z9D depending on the game. Meanwhile, that CRG9 is in the living room and takes up just a little too much space for comfort. It's a great display but I'm thinking something along the lines of 34"-40" could be nice. I'm sold on 32:9 and it would have to be 5120x1440 as well. Other than that 120+ Hz, HDR1000, G-Sync, and possibly OLED. QLED is nice but OLED(when done right) is nicer.
