The 9700 Pro was only possible through ATi's acquisition of another company called ArtX. It was that technology that made the Radeon 9700Pro possible. Again, this was ATi, not AMD. AMD purchased ATi after that.

And fired everyone immediately because there was no knowledge transfer or keeping of talent. Sigh.
