OC3D has reported that the UK’s Atomic Weapons Establishment(AWE) next supercomputer will be a combination of Cray and AMD’s EPYC technology. Seems that the AWE is eyeing AMD’s EPYC 7542 CPU’s which are a 32/64 core/thread beast built on a 7nm fab. Presently it is not known how many of these processors will be paired together but I’m sure the numbers will be impressive.
AWE head of HPC, Andy Herman was quoted as saying how important high-performance computing is and how it underpins the majority of their science-based programs. Cray’s newest Shasta supercomputer, called Vulcan, will offer around 7 petaflops.
