Third-gen Threadripper, here we come. APISAK has spotted a listing for an "AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X 24-Core Processor," which implies 48 threads of goodness. Based on the naming convention, enthusiasts believe these Zen 2-based multi-core monsters will top out at 64 cores (32-core 3970X, 48-core 3980X, 64-core 3990X).
The box for an upcoming Threadripper cooler from ARCTIC (Freezer 50 TR) also lends credence to the 64-core theory. "It is an extremely powerful cooling solution for AMD's TR4 Threadripper CPU, capable of efficiently and quietly cooling even 32- and 64-core CPUs with a TDP up to 250 W."
Whether we'll see any third-generation Threadripper parts with fewer than 24 cores remains to be seen. Such a part would be a tough sell, however, given that AMD's Ryzen 9 3950X with 16 cores and 32 threads will finally make its retail debut next month as well. While technically not a high end desktop (HEDT) processor, the Ryzen 3950X is certainly a burly slice of silicon.
