Apple, Amazon, and Google, are uniting with the Zigbee Alliance to create a new smart home standard. Controlling IoT devices by ‘Connected Home over IP’ project will help consumers in the growing sea of devices. CHIP’s goal will be to create a common IP standard for home IoT devices to communicate more simply but security and compatibility will be of paramount concern as well.

From the CHIP website,

The project is built around a shared belief that smart home devices should be secure, reliable, and seamless to use.

Reporting on this venture as one of their last stories to end on, The Inquirer noted a couple of missing names. Bixby and Z Waves are currently not on the list so consequently there are a few gaps in the project. The Zigbee Alliance does have some other big names to round out the list so all hope is not lost. Samsung, Ikea, and Phillips are among their members. BBC News has reported that these many tech giants hope to have draft specifications out by late 2020.
