Well, I guess this shouldn't be too hard, given we already have Powerline Ethernet --- you could just encode audio on the transmitter side, send it via an already established format, and then decode on the recieving end. Include a small amp if you wanted to power small speakers directly, or a line out to drive an external amp.

Surprised it hasn't already been done - or I guess you could do it pretty easy with something like RPi units...

Just as long as you're ALSO not doing Ethernet over Power. I imagine the two would battle for bandwidth not to mention signal integrity.

They would be the same network I would imagine, so long as they aren’t doing anything proprietary Powerline Ethernet is an available open standard (IEEE 1901)
 
I've had powerline ethernet work pretty darn well, sustaining >300Mbps. That's well beyond anything that a few lossless audio streams would need, but I do question the utility behind this as it's assuming that power goes where one needs it to.

If power doesn't go there, it's almost certainly better to run low-voltage speaker wire rather than high-voltage mains for new speaker positions.
