Free games thread

Endless Sky on GoG ... to scratch that 2D space combat itch. Oh yeah, also included are commodity trading, fleet building, main story and side quests, and more ...

One of the nice things about GoG is that you can search their database for Free Games (e.g., while filtering out DLC and sorting by ranking) and come up with a list.

Boggles my mind on two fronts.

First, MICROPROSE IS BACK!

Second, how on Good God's earth do they make this available for free (forever!) and only hope to make some money from the sale of the soundtrack???

My guess is, they want to avoid being sued by Bethesda for similarity to Wolfenstein games.

Any more observations? :D
Well not to be that guy... but you want me to download an executable from Google drive that is supposed to be a game written by AI in two days that utilizes direct X 11.

No.

For a few reasons.

1. I'm not going to download an unknown exe to my system from google drive.

2. I don't trust an game driving my 5090 written by AI not to cause a runaway condition and cook my card.

3. There is no way in hell this guy did a code review before publishing. It's by AI, we don't know what else it does beside a game. Give me a full code review so I know it's not going to do something else and I'm good.

I might spin up a VM to run it in that I can explicitly control resource allocation. But honestly... probably not.

Didn't want to be captain negative about some ones hard work to write a game with AI... but no way am I trusting rando AI written EXE from some dude's google drive.... with a 'trust me bro' warranty. ;)

No backup system or old laptop to try this? It ran fine on my 12700K and integrated GPU. I sold my 245KF so the 9060 XT 8GB is collecting dust and I'm too lazy to put it in the 12700K system at the moment. Someone else tried the VM approach. It runs like a slideshow. I guess the emulated 3D isn't fast enough for it.

Anyway, just tried it on my Tiger Lake laptop and recorded a video for you:

That final car annoyed me longer than it should have.
